Throughout the movie Hairspray, there is a big controversy regarding race. Black people want to dance on a television show, however the white people have a different idea. Motormouth Maybelle tries to help her people have positive mindset by music. During this song, all of the black people, some white, led by Motormouth Maybelle (plaed by Latifah) are protesting segregation and singing these powerful lyrics. This song demonstrates bringing people, a community closer together through music. Another example similar to this would be during the time of the underground railroad. People will tell their plan to others in terms of music. These music techniques helped comunities get through the racial times.
This is so inspirational! I love the feeling and soul behind this music! Its amazing when you think of this history behind everything they are singing. Singing was a huge part of the underground railroad and has stayed an important part of it history ever since. It so great to see singing in Hollywood movies especially when it is linked with actual history.
I love Hairspray! Even though it is a musical that looks fluffy and fun on the outside, it is a deep and inspirational piece. I had the pleasure of being in the musical when I was in high school and it brought everyone in the cast together, I guess it was just something about that story that touched all of us deeply.
This is such a great song! I think it is really inspirational and this musical is a great way to bring people together no matter how they look and never to judge. I agree with Sara when she mentions the powerful affect of singing and how important it was to the slaves and how they used it to help them find good in what they were dealing with. I truly see so many different messages in this musical because it talks about not only judging based on your skin color, but also on how everyone is beautiful in their own way.
